NJ CERTIFIED COURT REPORTER (CCR):
Licensed by the State of New Jersey to work as a court reporter. The licensing exam requires a reporter to stenographically record and transcribe testimony at 225 words per minute, jury charge at 200 words per minute, and medical testimony at 180 words per minute. The reporter must pass each part of the exam with 95% accuracy. Once certified, a CCR must earn 15 Continuing Education Credits in each two-year cycle.
REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL REPORTER (RPR):
A designation given by the National Court Reporters Association for reporters who pass an exam similar to the NJ CCR exam. A written knowledge exam must be passed as well. Additional Continuing Eduction Credits must be achieved to retain the RPR designation.
REGISTERED MERIT REPORTER (RMR):
A designation given by the National Court Reporters Association to reporters who are able to stenographically record testimony at 260 words per minutes, literary dictation at 240 words per minute, and medical testimony at 200 words per minute, with 95% accuracy. A written examination must be passed as well. Once again, Continuing Education Credits must be earned to retain this certification.
CERTIFIED REALTIME REPORTER (CRR):
Certification by the National Court Reporters Association to write "realtime" at 180 words per minute. CRRs are able to hook their steno machines up to attorneys' computers so that they may receive instant translation of everything that is being said. This service is also popular within the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, where people are able to read what is being said on a computer screen or overhead projection. As with the RPR & RMR, Continuing Education Credits must be achieved each year in order to maintain this certification.
